COVID-19 Hero helping her community in tough times

Susie Ninevski, Managing Director of A.I.R. Recruitment, explains what being named the COVID-19 Hero at the 2020 RCSA Industry Awards means to her.

The afternoon of Friday June 26 saw me sitting in front of the computer at home, like many others in the industry, as the 2020 RSCA Awards began in a way none of us expected when nominating - online!

No fancy dress or new shoes this year - although I did dress for the occasion and had a glass of champagne in my hand!

I was honoured to be recognised as a finalist in the 2020 Rising Star Award category and was certainly excited as the awards started. Mary Savova was announced as the Rising Star winner midway through the ceremony (congratulations!) and I continued to watch; celebrating and supporting my fellow recruiters.

The event was virtually over and I was getting ready to shut the computer down and it was quite surreal to hear Charles Cameron announce my name and recognising my work as the most inspirational in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

It really was amazing! I yelled out to my family. I was so excited.

At the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown in NSW, I joined forces with my local State Member, Sonia Hornery MP, to help support people under financial and career stress.

I knew I had to do something as I was taking so many calls where both parents had lost their jobs - that’s both jobs in one household. I was listening to heartbreaking stories from individuals in dire circumstances.

The Wallsend area is a very close-knit community and when times are tough, we stick together. To me, it was vitally important that we all supported each other and lent a hand where possible.

For weeks I was seeing the huge impact on families and their budgets both locally and national from the COVID-19 crisis. I wanted to give back and support communities in any way possible.

I made the decision for A.I.R Recruitment to provide free reviews, advice and guidance on resumes to help get people back in the workforce. But to me this was still not enough - I needed to do more.

Keeping people healthy was crucial and offering food vouchers from local businesses to those in need was a good start.

I continue to have many jobseekers call me just for a chat, and I strongly encourage this because not everyone has someone to turn to. If I can lend an ear and offer support or guidance, I’m more than happy to do that.

I wanted to do something that would make a real difference; no one could ever have predicted the situation we were, and are, in.

I am absolutely thrilled to have been named the RCSA's 2020 COVID-19 Hero. As we are now seeing in Melbourne, COVID-19 is far from over, and I really hope that I am the only person to ever receive the COVID-19 hero award!

I would like to say thank you to the RCSA and Charles Cameron, the award is an incredible acknowledgment from my peers but is only possible because of the trust my clients and candidates place in A.I.R Recruitment.
