Fostering A Strong Health & Safety Culture in a Temporary Workforce
By Brett Bothma – Director, Tech 5 Recruitment
At Tech 5 Recruitment, a large proportion of our workforce is temporary contractors spread over various client worksites. This means when it comes to health and safety legislation, responsibility is shared between three parties - the leading PCBU (the client), us (other PCBU), and our temp workers (subcontractors).
It is essential for all three parties to 'consult, cooperate and coordinate' on health and safety matters, so as well as having robust policies and procedures in place, our Health and Safety Committee are always looking for new and innovative ways to foster a positive health and safety culture with our contractors.
Our Christchurch-based team had been running Health & Safety Weeks in their region for a while, so we supersized the idea in June and took Health & Safety Week national. Across the week, we ran various educational and engagement initiatives, including quizzes, prizes and giveaways, a 'Tradie Tuesday' dress-up day for our consultants, photo competitions, and the 'What is your why' video campaign.
We shared many examples of positive health and safety behaviours and stories of our team engaging with clients and contractors on-site. The team gave out prizes and rewards, and we shared extra health and safety content and tips across our social media channels with the hashtag #safetystartswithus.
The 'What is your why' video campaign was a new idea we brought in, where our consultants went out on-site with some treats and engaged with their contractors and clients. They were asked, 'what motivates you each day to go home from work safe?' and we captured their answers on video.
The video's objective was to get our team thinking beyond the rules and regulations of health and safety and remind them of the 'why'. It was a great way to make health and safety personal, open up conversations between our consultants, contractors, and clients, and foster positive conversations about the importance of health and safety.
We had an outstanding response and put together a great compilation that we could share to give everyone an insight into our team and remind us all why we need to work together to keep each other safe on our sites.
Our Health and Safety Week content and 'What is your why' video had outstanding results across social media, helped boost our online presence, and provided important education to our workforce while driving home an important message. Our team gained valuable insights about gaps in knowledge that needed to be filled and taught us that to foster a strong and positive culture around health and safety, we need to make it personal.
