Meet Prime Super’s Sponsorship and Events Manager, Kirsten Braham

Superannuation fund Prime Super is the principal partner and long-time supporter of RCSA. The Brief sat down with Sponsorship & Events Manager, Kirsten Braham based in Victoria, to discuss her interests, career and the superannuation challenges facing RCSA members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: Tell us about the Kirsten outside of work.

Becoming a mum has been the best thing ever. My husband, Hayden and I are so lucky to have two such adorable, intelligent little girls, Harper who is four in May and Ella who will be one in March.

I’m known for my cooking, baking and entertaining – I really do love events so much that I am often hosting parties and having our friends over (when they’re allowed to be).

Hayden and I love to travel, good food and wine, so before life got a bit crazy, we loved travelling (eating) our way around the world. I think so far, our favourite restaurant in Australia would be Brae, and if and when we can ever travel again, Gaggan in Bangkok is a must!

I also come from a golfing mad family, so I’ve spent a lot of my life on a golf course. I love it, and look forward to playing more when the girls are older, and I have some more time.

Q: Tell us about your career journey. What have you done previously, and how did you get into your current role?

I started my event career in Queensland with Moreton Hire working at reception, before moving into the events team. I then took a marketing and events role with Construction Skills QLD for a period before taking off overseas to work at Big White Ski Resort in Canada, which at the time seemed like a dream, until I was there and realised how much I don’t like the cold!

After returning home I worked for the Australian Institute of Company Directors. I ran the events program in Brisbane, and then moved to look after the six regional areas, running four to five events per region – which was a lot of travel in the end.

The move to Melbourne came about through my Husband who is originally from Sale. Here, I was lucky enough to get a contract events role with Australian Institute of Charted Accounts. The role with Prime Super presented itself just as my contract was due to finish – it was like it was meant to be! Five years and two beautiful babies on, and I’m so proud to work at an organisation that puts members first, and is a part of something that makes a difference in people’s lives.

How has COVID-19 impacted your life, and your work?

I went home from work on Tuesday the 17th of March, with the view of finishing the week before starting maternity leave. Well, I could have never imagined what happened next. I gave birth to Ella the very next day, at 7:30am. At this time I was lucky enough to still be able to have Hayden and Harper visit, but due to COVID restrictions no one else was able to come and meet Ella. Her and I came home on the 21st of March, and apart from a few outings here and there between lockdowns, our entire family didn’t leave home until the 30th of October. I spent over 200 days in our house with a newborn, toddler, and husband… could it get any more fun?! It could… we waited four months for our application to be approved to come to Queensland to visit my parents, so they could meet their newborn granddaughter. After two weeks in hotel quarantine, my parents were able to meet Ella, who, by then, was eight months old.

A few weeks up here with amazing weather, and all in all a better lifestyle, we knew that we wanted to permanently move here for the girls. With the incredible support of Prime Super accommodating my new work arrangements, we are living the dream. Last Sunday we had fish and chips for dinner on the beach, followed by a swim and ice cream – it doesn’t get much better than that!

COVID has also changed the work environment for most people – a lot of industries that relied on in-person interaction really suffered. In a services industry like super, we’ve really been fortunate to be able to pivot to operating online, and many events have also been able to shift to online platforms. I’m looking forward to seeing this in action and seeing the creative ways people have adapted – I missed a lot of it on maternity leave. I’m also looking forward to getting back to face-to-face events in the future though.

What do you love about your job?

I just love events. I love meeting new people, creating memorable experiences, and developing unique platforms to share knowledge. I love seeing an idea come to life. Events don’t just happen - so much thought, planning and time goes in.

I love that my role enables Prime Super to engage with everyone, to share the information I wish I had early on in my career. It’s so nice to work with partners that are passionate about what they do for their members.

Why do you enjoy working with the RCSA and our member base?

From my work history you can see I have a soft spot for a membership organisations, and what makes them what they are – the members! It’s easy working with other likeminded people who also want the best for their members. The RCSA members are also fun, friendly and care about what they do, which makes them all the better to work with.
