Meet Rachel Knox, New Zealand’s 2021 RCSA Rising Star Winner

The prestigious RCSA Industry Awards provide the opportunity to recognise the best of best in the recruitment, staffing and workforce solutions sector in Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand’s 2021 Rising Star award, Rachel Knox, discusses what the award means to her.

Winning New Zealand’s Rising Star Award, 2021

I won the Rising Star Award for 2021, as recognition for the work I have contributed to the recruitment team and industry since 2020. The award was acknowledgement for my work on diversity, inclusivity, and client and candidate care.

Starting my role on the first day of lockdown made me appreciate my job just a little bit more (in the fact that I still had one!).

I had no idea what recruitment was until my first day of work, at home, on my couch, in my PJ’s.

Starting as a Recruitment Co-Ordinator working for the Everest People team, I quickly picked up the processes and applied my skillset gained from working in customer care and professional services environments.

Everest have provided me with a wide range of professional development opportunities, and I have learnt a lot and been able to apply to my work.

I have gained my Recruitment Consultants Certificate, He Papa Tikanga (Level 3) with Te Wananga o Aotearoa, which has helped me better understand Maori values and customs.

I have also undertaken Foundations of Emotional Intelligence, Courageous Conversations and Building your Resilience training and I am currently completing Psychometric Accreditation with OPRA.

This development has supported me to be more effective and professional in my interactions with a diverse client and candidate base.

What does winning the award mean to me?

Before the awards, I had never won anything in my life (apart from a tennis racket from a raffle when I was a kid)!

Winning the award feels very surreal and I am still processing this.

Before I started with Everest People, I had very little confidence - which would never have worked in the world of recruitment.

I have become more confident in my ability to do the work and do it well through the team at Everest People who are strong, high performing individuals providing me with support and the aspiration to be best I can be.

Because of my team backing me and the training I have received, I was able to go up on stage on the night and make my thank you speech – one that I was dreading as I had never spoken publicly before!

The atmosphere on the night was celebration of the hard work that the recruitment industry has put in over the last year. Thanks to the RCSA for celebrating the industry and surrounding me with passionate and driven people.

I would love to express my congratulations to the other nominees and winners on the night. It was inspiring to hear the success of other recruitment professionals which drives me to keep working on my service delivery.

I met a variety of people at the RCSA Awards night and would welcome new connections via LinkedIn. I am always keen for a coffee and a chat!

Rachel’s background in administrative roles in the professional services arena combined with exposure to working in diverse client and cultural environments supports her in providing a seamless service. She aims to build a stronger network in the Waikato and become a trusted advisor in the recruitment space.
