Some Quality Time with Prime Super’s Radek Kotlarczyk
Superannuation fund Prime Super is the principal partner and long-time supporter of RCSA. The Brief sat down with Regional Manager Radek Kotlarczyk, based in Perth, to discuss his interests, his career and the superannuation challenges facing RCSA members during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Q: Tell us about Radek Kotlarczyk away from work. Hobbies?
My partner Kristy and I have three wonderful children, Isla who is five and twin boys Max and Archie who are turning three in October. There is never a dull moment in the house, it’s a mixture of chaos, crazy and fun every day of the week!
Isla is beginning to play tennis and the boys, well, their activities range from riding scooters to destroying their room.
I love travelling around WA, particularly to the spectacular Margaret River region to enjoy its wineries, restaurants and beautiful beaches.
All the family are mad, one eyed West Coast Eagles supporters!
Q: You have a strong history in financial planning and business development. Tell us about your professional career to date. How did you get into the superannuation game?
I have a genuine interest in financial markets and banking experience, which is how my career in financial planning started.
Working at one of the ‘big 4’ banks as a financial planner was a very rewarding time in my career. The ability to provide clients with holistic advice and better their financial positions gave me real enjoyment.
After numerous years in financial planning, I joined an International bank in a training and development role.
A specialist superannuation role came up at super fund called Prime Super… Ten years later, I still have a fantastic and rewarding time with my colleagues, members and employers at Prime Super.
Q: Coronavirus has thrown the economy a massive curveball. What is your key role in dealing with the situation?
Yes, coronavirus has not only thrown a massive curveball to the economy but to our way of life, working arrangements, finances and even our health.
From my perspective, it has seen us provide a real personal service to both our members and employers who have been directly affected by the coronavirus - whether it’s providing online presentations to employers and staff, or just talking and reaching out to members who have been most affected financially and helping them with options available.
Q: What is the most common question from members and what has been your response?
Since the Coronavirus started, there has been market volatility and significant economic downturn. With these market fluctuations, the most common question is “should I be in cash or another investment option with less exposure to risk?” My answer remains the same, super is a long-term investment and over the long term, markets will eventually rebound.
Most of our super members are invested in the MySuper option which delivered an average return of 8.14% p.a. for the 10 years to 30 June 2020, including the last four months of extreme volatility in markets. This return ranks the option in the top quartile performance over that period*.
With inflation for the last 10 years of 2.41% p.a., Prime Super has delivered an average real return of 5.73% p.a., a result that shows Prime Super delivers above average long term returns through good times and bad.
Q: What do you love about your job?
I love helping both our employers and members navigate the complexities of superannuation.
Part of our role is to make superannuation as straightforward as possible. Therefore, employers can concentrate on what is important to them, running their business and members can be assured that their super is in good hands.
It is a great feeling knowing that our members trust us to provide them with the best possible retirement outcome for a lifetime of work.
Q: Why do you enjoy working with RCSA and our member base?
The RCSA itself does a tremendous job to improve the recruitment industry. Both the RCSA and Prime Super are aligned in that they are member centric and members are at the heart of everything they do.
I really enjoy working with an upbeat, optimistic and diverse group of people in such a variety of different industries.
The ability to find a place for people in work has never been more important than now, due to the impact of Coronavirus.
